This is a busy restaurant with great delicious food served with efficient service. Try the fried vermicelli which is unique and very delicious.
Itโs still the hype
JB Ah Meng, Geylang: I love holes in the walls and JB Ah Meng has upgraded with their moved spot. I have been going to this for years as itโs right around the corner from me. Itโs straight forward, spartan and white light so bright, you will see everything in your dish. Ambience is not their thing here. What theyโre good at are these simple Malaysian dishes. They have become a local icon, having lured the whoโs who in the culinary world - Adrian Ferria, Anthony Bourdain, politicians, celebrities and whoever. You know this as the entire walls covered in blown-up pictures of the stars. However, after an absence of two years, I feel that the taste standards have dipped. The prices have upped considerably. They still have non-stop streams of people who have travelled afar to eat here. A lot of curious foreigners weather tourists or business trippers. The popular dishes are the fried bee soon which used to be deep fried and is a curious flying disc of crunchy noodles. We had soggy ones that broke up. Prawn paste chicken still retains its good flavours. Saledegg prawn was disappointing. The sauce choked up into clumps and were hard versus tender. Lotus root long beans still have the wok kick. I was disappointed and we headed to Geylang Lorong 29 for the wok hey charcoal infused Hokkien Mee across for a greater kick. JB Ah Meng will continue to draw hordes of curious tasters but the good old days are over for me. #eatstylishtravelstylish
