Avery Restaurant San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year

Celebrated my boyfriend's birthday here with the anniversary menu and I have to say I enjoyed the food very much! It was so creative and the presentation was absolutely gorgeous! The service is amazing too, they greeted us right away, provided us with the huge chunk of caviar bumps that I reserved, and also gave us free champagne to celebrate his birthday! The restaurant environment is very small, but a very cozy vibe! Loved this place so much!
Not surprised at all to see them closing.
Food was average, service was terrible. It should have happened long ago.
Amazing all around and has been since it opened.
Chef Rodney and his team are at the top of their craft. Everything was delicious, beautiful, and interesting.

I am not sure where these other reviews are coming from unless something has dramatically changed. We were greeted immediately, had drinks and first bites downstairs (SO good) and then went up for the remainder of the meal. It was incredible. We loved every bite. And we did the champagne tasting which was delicious and very generous and also the caviar pancakes. Yummm! We had so many favorite bites, and I was blown away. I also love the idea of the sommelier picking a wine for you.

We had such a nice experience at Avery last night! It's an intimate small space. You start with drinks and small bites in the lounge downstairs before heading upstairs to the dining room. All the small bites were delicious - especially the avocado pie. We also opted for the caviar bump (served on the back of your hand) - that was delicious and fun. In the dining room, all the main courses were great and beautifully presented- there were no weak dishes. I especially loved the curry, the bison, the onion tart, and the ice cream with honey. The spacing of the courses was perfect and we found the service to be attentive and thoughtful. Sean, the somm, is knowledgable and easy to talk to. The only awkwardness - and it's minor- is that they are running the restaurant with about 3 people - 2 chefs and the somm - so when we got there, there was nobody to meet us at the door and so we didn't know what to do with ourselves for a few minutes - but then they came and said hi and got us started with drinks and bites - and from there it was seamless. Avery totally deserves their Michelin star!
In seven years of dining at some of San Francisco's unique
In seven years of dining at some of San Francisco's unique and incredible restaurants, I'm writing to share our recent experience at Avery Restaurant. We booked our reservation through Tock for a table for 4 on August 10th, celebrating a work milestone with colleagues. Our meal was scheduled for 7:00 p.m., but we wouldn't receive the final bill until 11:35 that evening -- over four and a half hours later. From the moment of our arrival it was evident something was wrong. We were kept downstairs for over 40 minutes before being seated -- the host brought drinks and canapes, but most of these tasted a bit off. Dishes were arriving at bizarre intervals, and over the whole evening, we repeatedly waited for over 30 minutes between courses or even staff checking on us. Many of the dishes tasted a bit funky -- with raw scallops arriving at room temperature and several of the courses missing the mark. After the two hour mark, I began feeling deeply ill and had to excuse myself from the meal -- I would discover after a doctors visit two days later that this was very likely viral food poisoning, with the timing of symptoms lining up with the start of this meal. Two hours in, we were all a bit weirded out by the whole experience, and we should have trusted our gut and asked to wrap up the meal early. For the three in our party that remained for the additional two and a half hours after I left from becoming ill, they described the experience as "bizarre", with dishes continuing to arrive after long waits. The staff ended up apologizing at the end of the 4.5-hour experience, but the full and substantial bill didn't at all match the experience we got. New and innovative dining experiences should be celebrated, and I admire Avery for the ideas behind some of the dishes they put together. Unfortunately, the dining experience completely missed the mark, with unsafely prepared food that left us confused and impatient -- leading to 4.5 hours that felt awkward and imbalanced.
Tried out the tasting menu at Avery for a birthday
Tried out the tasting menu at Avery for a birthday celebration. First off, I thought the overall concept of the restaurant was quite interesting. Really liked how casual it felt inside compared to other places, and it was fun starting with cocktails and canapes downstairs in the lounge before moving upstairs for dinner. Plus, the service was fantastic. Our server was very kind and friendly -- the perfect balance of attentive while also giving us our own space. I thought the food was pretty good overall. Our favorites of the night were the Avocado Pie, Clam Taco, Aebleskiver, and of course all the fun add-ons like the caviar bumps and the caviar pancakes. I wasn't the hugest fan of the meat courses (Roasted Bird and Bison) or the desserts. Ordering drinks with dinner was a little confusing... I believe they offer a sake pairing and a champagne pairing. However, if you want to order something by the glass, there is no set list to choose from. You pretty much tell the team what you like, they will suggest something based on whatever they have open, and you pay a set price of $55 per glass. We ended up just ordering a bottle because the glass thing seemed too complicated/overwhelming! In general, glad we got to try but I don't know if it was worth the $1100 we ended up paying for the both of us.

Food-- told the server one dish was too salty to eat that night. He confirmed with manager and come back with verbal confirmation and apologized, that's it. No replacement or follow ups. I diluted my dish with a cup of water but still too salty. Also I waited long to get water refilled. Cleanness-- I ate fiber in my tart from unknown cloth, also saw the fabric sticked on my fork. Service-- All issued the restaurant was acknowledged, no corrective actions when I was there. Write emails also no one replied. The worst Michelin restaurant I've even been to.
We tried the shorter menu, and came in around 5:30 PM.
It took less than 2 hours. Service is pretty good Food exceeds my expectations as well. $89 is a great deal, so come and try it out!
I felt like I was dining in an episode of Chef's Table.
As it turns out, Chef Rodney was featured in the Dominique Crenn episode of Chef's Table during his time at Atelier Crenn. The atmosphere felt very intimate and cozy. The service was excellent. And the food lived up to its potential. We chose the $89 Supper Menu, and it was the perfect amount of food. I enjoyed everything but the standouts included the River trout, tortellini, and grilled bison for me. I recommend this as a relatively more affordable set menu in SF by a very talented chef.
