Downtown LA Proper Hotel Los Angeles Reviews from The Last Year
Weekend getaway
Beautiful property, has potential! Food menu at both restaurants is good. Service still needs some training, but overall good experience. Rooms are small if you don’t get an upgrade!
❤️The best place to stay in LA!!
This place was a last-minute choice and it ended up being a great addition to our trip. The beds were comfy. The rooms are well designed, and the food and drinks were also very good.
Will be back
The service is exceptional along with the amenities and location. Tiare and Mo made our stay memorable and exceptional. Check in was quick and check out was seamless. Will most definitely be back very soon. 10 out of 10, will definitely recommend.
Fantastic hotel.
Quaint, clean, friendly staff, very authentic LA. Don't expect huge rooms because this is a refurbished boutique hotel, but expect clean and cute because that's what you'll get. The rooftop view is to die for. And don't forget to try the ramen place a block down--it's so good! This is my new favorite hotel to recommend to my clients who are in town, or when wifey and I need to get away from our two homes
Great choice for USC, DTLA and Amex FHR
Excellent service and amenities. Mother and son trip (age 11) and everyone made us feel welcome. Delicious chocolate bar and sparkling water in the room. Fancy complimentary fresh juices, apples, and protein bars in the gym. Nice rooftop bar and restaurant downstairs. Booked through Amex plat so I received an upgraded room, free breakfast, $100 credit. I was the only one who showed up for the complimentary Sunday morning yoga class and I had a private session! Fun days visiting the Broad museum and USC. My son was thrilled to get an extra chocolate bar at checkout when we asked.
Must stay! I will be back!
The cutest hotel in DTLA! Stayed here for a work trip and was impressed with the service provided. From the moment I pulled up to valet, to the front desk and room service - service was top notch! I have already recommended this location to my co-workers. Jenny at the front desk was friendly and attentive to my request. As I got to the location earlier than anticipated, she helped get me a room quickly to take my work calls in a private location. The views from my room were iconic!!! Priscilla and Jesus at the restaurant downstairs were amazing. Their recommendations were spot on! I will absolutely be back!
The Proper Hotel falls under the Marriott and I was able to
The Proper Hotel falls under the Marriott and I was able to utilize a points stay to help offset the cost of staying here. After seeing so many photos of the Proper Hotels, I was so excited for a gorgeous stay. Overall- while the hotel is beautiful, the stay itself was just alright and I'd say it was definitely a solid 4 stars. Ambience and decor: Incredible. Kelly Wearstler is like no other. Every single detail in this hotel is well thought out and beautiful. The walls are stunning and the furniture and color combinations are just such a dream. The lobby is tiny, but it's full of so much character! Views: The views of DTLA from the rooftop are absolutely unbeatable. The hotel has a restaurant on the roof (Cara Cara). The pool is also located on the roof and the views are absolutely insane. The Room: There's gotta be a trade-off right. The rooms here are itty bitty. Cute, but definitely a tight squeeze and because you're downtown, they are loud. A lot of noise comes through the windows especially if you're in a lower level room. The room itself was not very comfortable. Although aesthetically pleasing, the tiny bed wasn't comfortable. Cost: Keep in mind that in addition to the cost of the room, you will be paying a steep parking fee. There are a number of nearby lots that charge slightly less than the hotel valet does.
Can't wait to come back
The Proper is an excellent choice for accommodation. From the moment you arrive until the time you depart, every staff member here is exceptional. The service is impeccable. This is my second visit, and I'm already eagerly anticipating my next stay. It offers a wonderful retreat within the heart of a bustling city.
Pros and Cons
All around ok. The hotel itself is absolutely stunning. Getting to dtla is always inconvenient so prepare yourself for a very depressing city and overpriced parking. Our room had toenail clippings in the ground when we arrived which was repulsive and we were also given a room different from what we had booked. The restaurant was so-so. Food was seasoned ok but overcooked and overpriced. The beds were very comfortable. The rooms also have Apple TVs which don't currently make sense with streaming services not allowing you watch anything outside of your IP address. Every person on staff was very kind however and it is one of the more beautiful hotels I have ever seen.
Exceptional Downtown LA Boutique Hotel
Definitely recommend staying at the Proper DTLA. An exceptional experience in all regards with beds that are the best in the business. Staff is terrific, friendly, and helpful. Views from the penthouse restaurant are probably some of the best in LA.
Diamond in the Rough
Wonderful staff teams at the valet, door, and service desk! The room was adorable and comfortable, with amazing touches: chocolate bar and sparkling water upon arrival, unbelievably enticing smelling toiletries, comfy robes, more than sufficient space to hang/store clothes, room to sit and watch tv/eat room service, and remarkable decor within the room and throughout the hotel. (The bar was meh.)
A more than proper experience....
The Proper Hotel is definitely a most exquisite hotel. From the moment I stepped out of my car to check in to the instant my car was returned to me from valet, every hotel employee I encountered greeted me with a sincere appreciation for my stay at their hotel. A stellar elegance and style accompanied by a unique charm places this impeccable experience into a category that truly fits the name "proper."
had an amazing stay at Proper this weekend.
ALL staff from doormen, service staff, front desk, restaurant etc. were all very friendly, informative and accommodating. the parking lot next door was convenient ($30/24hr) and I felt more safe walking my dog around the hotel blocks than I did staying at the Ace (which is just up the street but has a much different safety vibe). The Amex Platinum perks came in handy with it being a designated fine hotel + resorts category hotel.... rooftop pool was kept warm enough to swim even during this cold, rainy weekend. food was excellent at the downstairs restaurant.. walking distance to many venues / restaurants / bars. my pup and i had a very comfortable stay. would love to come back. highly recommend.
I was charged for a room I had canceled over 2 weeks prior.
When reviewing my monthly credit card statement, I noticed the charge for the room. I called Proper Hotel to address the issue. The response from the customer service rep left me feeling terrible. One of the first questions he asked me was, "Did you read the refund policy? Did your reservation not allow for cancellations?" It was an interrogation. He made me feel like I did something wrong. I stated that I received e-mail confirmations, and nothing in the confirmations stated that I would still be charged for cancellation. I am Marriott Silver Elite status and have stayed at hundreds of hotels over the years, and I understand that mistakes happen. There never once was an acknowledgment of my experience or ownership of their error. There was no apology for wrongfully taking $400+ from my account. This is a huge error. I was left feeling less than, for something I did nothing wrong. For a "boutique hotel," I would expect better customer service. Maybe they do not receive the same training as other Marriott hotels. I do not recommend staying at this hotel or the restaurants affiliated with the property. I have stayed at all JW Marriott LA LIVE, the Courtyard, and Renaissance LA LIVE and have had seamless experiences.
I'm a bit conflicted in writing this review - I really
I'm a bit conflicted in writing this review - I really wanted to like this hotel and had high hopes for our stay. All of the staff we encountered were professional, courteous, and pleasant for the most part, but little things just kept adding up over the duration of our 2-night stay that ended up frustrating my partner and me to the point of no return. Let me explain. While we were driving to the hotel, I received an email stating that our reservation at Cara Cara that night had been cancelled due to inclement weather. After checking in, we stopped by the restaurant to inquire about the situation; however, the host had no idea what we were talking about. He literally had to take a photo of my cancellation email to text it to another coworker, who ended up being as equally confused as he was. Turns out the restaurant was in fact not closing early, so no harm no foul. However, the lack of coordination and miscommunication from the staff was slightly concerning; little did we know it was a premonition of things to come. For example, later that night, we had to make multiple, repeated calls to the front desk for them to bring us ice to our room. Again, not the biggest deal, but bear with me. On the second day, we left our water bottles outside our rooms for them to be refilled/replaced (as instructed by the valet who helped take our bags to our room the day prior), but never received any replacements. We then had to make an additional call for more water. Another slight annoyance was housekeeping's continued knocks at the door, even though we told them we wouldn't need turn-down service (they must have come to the door knocking at least 3 times). A little later that afternoon, we ordered Uber Eats, and what should have been a simple drop off to our door became anything but. The front desk ended up intercepting our food from the delivery driver and calling our room to ask if they should take it to our door, to which we accepted. We waited about 15 minutes, took a look outside our door, but the food wasn't there. It took us another additional call to the front desk before the food finally got delivered to us. That night, I was getting so fed up with calling the front desk that I ended up searching for an ice machine, but couldn't find one. Back to the front desk I went. On our third and final day, we checked out and left our bags with the front desk in order to walk to a brunch spot nearby. While we were at brunch, they tried putting our luggage in my car, but since I left my car in valet mode (which locks the trunk), they were unable to put it inside the trunk. When we got back to the valet we discovered that instead of leaving our luggage at the front desk they ended up stuffing everything into the back seat, scuffing, marring, and dirtying the white leather interior of my car. This ended up being the final straw for me and really pissed me off, because now I ended up having to spend time cleaning the back seat with my partner when this whole situation could have been prevented. To add insult to injury, some parts of the leather were actually scratched and we were unable to remove them after trying to wipe it down. To sum it up, nearly our entire experience at this establishment left us feeling like we wished we could just do everything ourselves. I'm not sure if the issue comes down to a lack of training/critical thinking skills, or if the staff is just absent minded/doesn't truly care, but each and any of the seemingly simple things that we needed throughout our trip felt so unnecessarily complicated and such a struggle honestly. Every single little thing just ended up being harder than it needed to be. This place is such a bad value, especially for the egregious prices they charge. To Proper Hotel - you're a five-star establishment, do better. We most definitely won't be back.
A friend and I stayed there this past weekend.
It exceeded every expectation we had. I am an avid traveler and stay in a lot of hotels, but I must say this was my best hotel experience ever. The service was over the the top but not stuffy. I have never experienced such professional and attentive staff. There was not one misstep over the weekend. The staff made us feel like the most important people in the hotel, but they somehow made all the other guests feel the same, as well. The hotel is beautiful and charming, the restarants in the hotel were amazing, and the rooms were very comfortable. I can't wait to return soon so I can be pampered again ! I cannot say enought good things about this hotel and the staff. Everything is absolutely top notch !

Give Downtown LA Proper hotel a try if you're looking for a luxurious getaway in LA. Beautiful hotel. Aesthetics are on point every square inch of the building; top notch service; stunning rooftop views; good food and beverage options; great "goodies" for guests - free yoga, juices at the gym, snack bars. Our highlights were breakfast at Caldo Verde restaurant and then evening cocktails on the roof, drinking in fine spirits and a beautiful LA view.

I am deeply disappointed at the level of service we received at this establishment, which felt discriminatory. A friend and I arrived to the front of the hotel and were greeted by two "doormen" who asked where we were headed we said the rooftop and they proceed to tell us it was closed for a private event. They then proceeded to tell us we could come to their restaurant, which we did, someone there then offered us a seat in their "speak easy", Dahlia which was very cute and service was great. Once there, you have to head to the second floor to use the bathroom--to our surprise we found out the rooftop was open, with plenty of tables, no reservations needed. Back to Dahlia, I realized they were sending anyone that looked 40+ and non-white to this "speakeasy". As we were leaving the establishment a couple hours later, as we waited for Uber, I saw and heard people telling the aforementioned "doormen" they were heading to Cara Cara, they weren't asked if they had reservations or if they were part of the "private event", they were female and definitely under 40. There was no obvious dress code as people in LA dress in PJs to go out. I was dressed smart/upscale so I know this was not an issue. Thumbs up this review if you had a similar experience. I will repost this review on the Cara Cara page as well to make other aware of this terrible practice. California law prohibits discrimination based on age and ethnicity in public accommodations, including restaurants. My experience at Proper Hotel and Cara Cara are disgusting and establishments must be held accountable when they do not uphold the principles of anti-discrimination legislation.

Booked this place with Chase Hotels and it was such a lovely stay! Stayed 1 night for a concert and we enjoyed it so much. The design of the room was unique and beautifully decorated. We loved the wooden floors and the overall aesthetic. Staff was very friendly! The valet was very helpful, and I would recommend using them instead of worrying about self-parking. Wish we had the chance to try out the restaurants because they looked very aesthetic! A few downsides were that the speaker in the room didn't work and that the area around the hotel was a bit loud at night and felt unsafe. Overall, the hotel itself was a very cool, trendy place to stay at and the service was very good. If I had the opportunity to stay here again, I would!
Came to LA Proper for a friends birthday dinner on the roof
Came to LA Proper for a friends birthday dinner on the roof top at CARA CARA (separate review) but sat downstairs at the bar first for a drink while we waited for our entire party to arrive. The hotel is beautifully done. I was loving the entire aesthetic of Caldo Verde which is the restaurant bar we sat at. Service was friendly but drinks are high. Only other thing I would note is that the bathrooms are located on the second floor and not easy to find. They are located amongst the guest room which I found odd and which kind of justifies Hotel Indigo's policy where you can only work the elevator with a guest room key and you can only get off on communal floors or your own floor. To have guest that are just there for the restaurant wandering on all the other floors in DTLA......hmmmm I don't know about that. But both restaurants on the bottom floor and lobby are beautiful.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.

Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here

perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
