Drakes Sonoma Coast Bodega Bay Reviews from The Last Year

Had such a beautiful time food wasn't great but vibes were so peaceful I would definitely recommend for drinks before dinner somewhere else
Marvelous Experience
We stayed at The Lodge at Bodega Bay for several days in February and had both morning and evening meals at Drakes Sonoma Coast. The restaurant was warm, welcoming and, like the Lodge, comforting and comfortable. Our breakfast seatings gave us an awesome view of the bay, flowering plants and birds flitting around. Highly recommend any of the eggs benedict, all favorites. Evening dining at Drakes was the food highlight of our trip (which included some meals in San Francisco). We had a sweet potato soup that was so incredible – when we first tasted it we immediately looked at each other with some astonishment. All the dishes we tried were (can we say?) “approachably sophisticated”, especially the Steamed Tomales Bay clams with chorizo – outstanding! The service was consistently perfect - attentive without being intrusive. Portions were generous, and we left relaxed, happy, and satiated. A truly marvelous experience!
WE LOVE HALLE!! She was amazing and so sweet.
Great overall experience and such amazing customer service. Can't wait to come back to see Halle!
If Drakes is #2 in Bodega Bay, I'm scared to go to #3
I ordered a vodka martini with blue cheese olives. The olives were old rancid and slimey. The bartender apologized and made me a new drink. Very limited menu, the worst ribeye I've ever had, don't get it. I asked for bread & they informed me it would be extra cost. We finished our salads before the bread showed up, so we sent it back. Slow service. Breakfast, food was good but service was terrible, I had to go look for some to close out our bill.
We had a view of flying rain out of the window.
Nice view while cozy inside. We parked in the small parking lot in the last of the EV spots but there was a sign saying they were still working on getting power to their EV boxes so we were fine. We accidentally went through the door to the den (where they have special guest events and a tv with sports) to the reception and the receptionist showed us a map to go through the lot to the restaurant. The fireside lounge was rained out and we stood in the entrance of the inside lounge until a waiter told us to walk through the restaurant to the host stand. We finally made it to the starting destination and the host seated us at a two person table by the window, informing somebody else that the lounge area was first come first serve since they didn't have a reservation like we did. 1 star off for the screaming children ruining the 5-star atmosphere. There were children all over the restaurant and lounge that had no dividing door. Our waiter had a name badge on saying Joaquim. He was working hard and had a lot of running around to do. I ordered the estate cocktail which was very lavender forward. You really have to love drinking the lavender flavors for this one. It was well presented though. My husband got a Pinot noir. Water was served in glasses I mistook for candle holders. For starters we shared the chorizo baked oysters which were full of flavor, but unfortunate also full of shells for both of us. We also had the aquchile which was tasty with red peppers for spice. It is a small dish though. I had the black rice bowl which was perfect for me in sour, Japanese, and mushroom flavors. I asked for extra hot sauce which they brought me chili in oil, dumped it all in, and it had a mild kick. My husband got the cod which he thought was mediocre. For dessert we shared the valley ford cheesecake which he devoured and still dreams about despite the apples on it and a glass of Madeira dessert wine. The restroom is clean and spacious and has cool papyrus like film on the doors. It is located past the host stand, past the private party area. The check was brought to us before asked, and we were asked and we were a guest at their hotel, which I assume most were. All in all we would prefer another fancy restaurant in the area because of the atmosphere, but may give the fireside lounge a try when the weather is better.

Gorgeous views, great service.
We stopped by for a quick breakfast and ordered a latte, French toast, and some eggs. I recommend the French toast - it had a fun, crunch texture and went so well with the fruit and jam it came with! The latte was fine.

We came here for our 1st anniversary and it definitely lived up to our expectations! When I first made the reservation I put in a request to be seated next to the window (since it was our anniversary) and they graciously took us up on our request. The window seating is beautiful and overlooks the bay. The waitress was very kind and knowledgeable about the menu - which apparently is always changing given that they only use local farm fresh ingredients! Which is so evident when you try the food. Oh my goodness. There was nothing that we tried here that we didn't like. The bread basket was served still warm with a seaweed butter- simple, yet so tasteful and satisfying. I ordered the oven roasted half chicken which was so juicy, and it came with roasted cabbage and a creme fraiche with dill and dijon mustard. I was skeptical at first when I read all of those ingredients on the menu but it was all sooo tasty and unlike anything I had ever tried. My husband had the black rice bowl with shrimp. He really enjoyed his dish - it had black rice with locally caught shrimp, avocado crema, and pickled vegetables. For dessert we shared an apple cheesecake- which my husband compared to a cheesecake he tried in Magnolia bakery, NY. Overall, the ambiance is perfect for a romantic date. The staff is so courteous. Portions are more than what a lot of fancy restaurants try to serve you. Every plate here is carefully crafted with the finest ingredients and it definitely shows. Will definitely be back - totally recommend!
Fantastic anniversary dinner celebration.
We started our evening outside sitting next to the fire pit with a lovely glass of wine as we watched the sun go down over the bay. The setting at Drakes is gorgeous. Our meal inside was equally lovely. We ordered the baked oysters and clams as starters. The clams were delicious. The oysters were tasty but a little heavy on the breading for my taste. My husband and I ordered the ribeye steaks and they were flavorful and cooked perfectly. Our table also had the halibut and the fish of the day. Both were delicious and cooked perfectly. We highly recommend this beautiful fine dining restaurant.
We took a chance and it turned out to be a fantastic dinner.
We sat at the bar and had great cocktails made by a lovely bartender. All salads and entrees were amazing! Our waiter was attentive and full of personality. I highly recommend this restaurant!!
Excellent Restaurant and Lounge
An excellent experience. Professional and friendly service from Tantra, our bartender. Beverage selections were numerous and well stocked. Food was delicious and served as ordered.

I came here with my family and we walked two miles in the rain for some food and cocktails. Upon arrival we were seated quickly as we were the only people in the restaurant. Our server seemed like they may have been new and did not know much of the menu. We were not offered any water but ordered our drinks. Upon delivery of the drinks, the server gave my mother and her friend theirs but asked to see my ID (I am 26 and had my 1 year old daughter with me). We thought it was strange that I was not ID'ed prior to ordering the drinks. I realized that I had left my wallet at the Airbnb that we had just walked in the rain from and asked if I could provide a different form of identification that proved my age. We provided a copy of my passport as well as my COVID vaccine verification that it's verified by the state of California that has my birthday and name on it. The server asked his manager if the forms of identification would suffice but the manager came out and told us that he could not serve me and "would you show a photo of your passport to airport security to get you through?". Obviously I would not, but this restaurant is a restaurant and not TSA. I also looked up the rules of TSA, and if you lose your ID prior to your flight you need to provide two forms of verification, one with your name, social, photo and address and one back up... we did this but it did not suffice. Obviously we know there are rules the restaurant needs to uphold for their licensing etc but the whole situation was strange and we were made to feel like we were lying about my age although I am a full grown adult! They declined to serve me and dumped the drink which to me is wasteful. All is fine but afterwards our server seemed to feel uncomfortable and the service was definitely lacking. The food was fine but I found a hair in mine :( Overall, we were disappointed in the service as we walked in the rain to enjoy a nice time together with a good view but understood there are rules to abide and we thought that the experience could've been better.

I was so nervous booking a reservation here in order to celebrate a special birthday with my husband. We are not from the area and had nothing to go off of except for the reviews. Unfortunately, they were all over the place - subpar food, inattentive service, etc. However, what sold me were the pictures of the venue. I figured if all else fails, at least we had a pretty sunset view... and pretty sunset views make everything feel better. Our reservations were for 6:45PM on a Sunday evening. We were seated promptly and waited on in a timely manner. I wish we were seated in one of the bay windows, but they were reserving the last open one "for a VIP guest". What we ordered - bread and butter + the soup of the night (minestrone). Both were tasty IMO, but my hubby thought the minestrone lacked flavor and wasn't thick enough. He also didn't like that the grated parm was sticking to his spoon. For our entree we shared the Mussel Cacio e Pepe - a delicious pasta with mussels. It was truly so, so delightful. However, if it hadn't been for the bread + butter we ordered, the size of the entree would've left us unsatisfied. The end of our meal came with a surprise birthday dessert - a generous portion of a FANTASTIC cake. I have no idea what it was called, but it had flavors of chocolate, peanut butter, and wafers. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm so glad we got to visit this beautiful place and I hope this review reassures you to take the chance and go for it, despite the bad experiences Yelped about recently.
Sensory Delight
The sights of the Pacific from the window of the Drakes are enough reason to go, but the food is a sensory delight, as well. Don't miss their beet and fruit salad.
Avoid, Avoid, Avoid!!!!
This restaurant was definitely the lowest point of my stay at Bodega Bay. How it has such a high star rating, does not make sense to me. I strongly recommend skipping this restaurant. The experience started off shaky. There is not enough parking for the amount of patrons this restaurant can service. We were seated by the window which had excellent views of the bay. Hence the three stars for atmosphere. My first dish was the soup of the day, New England Clam Chowder. It did taste pretty good, not the best one I have ever had but good. My husband outside of getting the wrong order at first, his baked clams were good. After glancing around the room we noticed that people were provided with bread. We never got bread nor asked if we wanted some. The main course...oh the main course. The positive: the sauce for the scallops was delicious. The scallops could of been cooked better but most of the plate was edible. Now the very not so positive: The ribeye steak was suppose to be cooked medium rare and it was tartare, had no flavor and I had to send it back. A manager stopped by our table and told us a round of drinks would be on the house for the inconvenience. We were grateful. The return of the steak, which took a while, was still not cooked properly. Now it was on the rare side but at least edible. So instead of sending it back I just ate most of it. The fingerling potatoes were bland, the pickled onions did not go with the meal. The fried onions were stale. I put a lot of salt on them and it did not help. This was a $56 steak!!! Not worth it. The dessert was good. I had the Pavlova. Avoid this restaurant!!!
Great weekday lunch!
We stopped in for lunch on a Monday around noon while the lunch menu was still available. The restaurant doesn't seem to be heavily attended for lunch and was not busy so we had a choice to tables by the windows. The lunch menu was not extensive, but offered a nice selection. We had the Cuban Sandwich and Seared Yellowfin Tuna Nicoise. The Cuban was good, but the Yellowfin Nicosie was fabulous! Our hostess, Consuelo, was attentive...but not too attentive! We were pleasantly surprised by our experience and would highly recommend this restaurant for a classy, sit-down lunch on the Sonoma Coast.
Lack of Attention to Details
I saw reviews and pictures of Drakes and thought it would be perfect to celebrate a birthday dinner. The view looked great and would be a nice way to unwind from a busy day. Unfortunately, there's a a lock of attention to detail that is surprising for the level of restaurant this place tries to be. In my reservation notes, I requested a window seat if possible so we could have a nice view. When we were seated we weren't given one despite that there was an empty table next to the window. I didn't push it as I thought perhaps there was another reservation there, but for our entire dinner no one sat at the table! And I know there wasn't anybody coming later as we left around 9:30 PM and the restaurant was fairly empty. It's doubly strange because when I checked in, the host didn't even look at her notes and knew the number of my party and said immediately said yes, we have your table right here. So there was forethought there and yet they wouldn't seat us at a requested table despite no one else had reserved it. In the notes there's an option to select if you are celebrating something, so I selected birthday. A restaurant of a higher caliber would have acknowledged this with a "happy birthday" but there was no inkling that they knew. The waiter was friendly enough but seemed a little clunky/inexperienced. Our waters were never once filled by any of the waitstaff, the table was left dirty when entree plates were cleared, utensils were placed down somewhat randomly - right side for one person, left side for another. Just little things that were odd. The food was fine and well-portioned. However the pork chop came with "bulghur wheat" that was overcooked or undercooked (I'm not sure?) as it was unpleasantly hard and crunchy to eat, so I left it untouched. It wasn't quite the birthday celebration I had in mind!
Could be better....much better.
Ever have a dinner that you couldn't eat? Hard to believe but it happened to us here. Chicken was so hard and dry, would have made a better hammer than a dinner.
