FG Rotterdam Reviews from The Last Year
Could be worth 1 star!
The food itself was delicious and the atmosphere was good. Also the first time that we had the feeling of being full from aisle 4 at a star restaurant. Often and too much of the same sauce over the dishes. Portions too large to even enjoy the next dish, let alone an extensive coffee with friandises. Here, excess is literally harmful. Very unfortunate, considering that if the dishes were more proportionate and less sauce was used, you would enjoy the combination of flavors much more.

I could suffice with the review: it was excellent in every way. And even better than the last time I was here. From the 8 courses and the range of amuse-bouches, there is definitely the 'whow' that I am always looking for. And with a professional but not overbearing atmosphere, it was a great evening. No photos this time because they would be less beautiful than the dishes themselves were 🙂
Poor price/quality
We were really looking forward to this restaurant. The atmosphere when we entered was not special. The chairs looked great, but you sat too low and couldn't lean your back Service was friendly, but you expect more experience and atmosphere instead of reciting the standard story🙈 Amuse started well except for the dim sum In our opinion, the three subsequent dishes all had the same cream sauce on them. Which also makes the dishes delicious. Never before in such a restaurant I found 8 courses too much. I leave feeling like I've been to All You Can Eat🙈 All in all…. We didn't think it was worth €700 for 2 people. Then I'd rather go to Gold twice for that money... The food wasn't bad, but the sauces were too much and the same… and just not surprising!
Top prices!
First of all: We are experienced in Michelin-starred restaurants and it is fair to say that eating in Michelin-starred restaurants all over the world has become a culinary hobby for us over the years. The food was good. Nothing more, nothing less. Some courses were absolutely convincing, others were too bland and unimaginative for 2 stars. What really bothered us, however, was the very hectic atmosphere at the beginning. There was no time to settle into the evening. You were immediately overwhelmed with an aperitif, bread, a greeting from the kitchen and a selection of salt and pepper. Well-intentioned was not well done here. There were 3 waiters at the table at once and each wanted to know something different. So you had absolutely no time to concentrate on the individual components. The beginning was simply overloaded with everything and was reminiscent of ordering at Starbucks, where you are confronted with various questions. This hectic atmosphere continued for about 2 hours, until all the other tables were occupied and there were also several waiters at the table at the same time, bombarding people with questions. We also absolutely do not accept that if the food is spilled when it is served and the waiter notices this (one of the waiters spilled soup on the table and his own hand), you have to point out that the table should be cleaned. The wine accompaniment was good, mostly consistent and well timed. However, the good to average evening was to come to an unpleasant end. When we checked the bill, we noticed that we had been charged too much for a bottle of water. Yes, it can happen - but it has never happened to us in any Michelin-starred restaurant worldwide before. We have also NEVER paid €27.50 for a glass of champagne. However, the feeling of systematic rip-off was to grow even stronger. At the start of the evening, we were asked whether we would like the "Wagyu course" as well (i.e. 9 courses for €90 extra per person instead of 8 courses) or whether we would like to EXCHANGE the main course (venison) for the Wagyu. There was not a single word about the fact that an exchange would result in an additional charge. We were all the more surprised when we were ultimately charged an extra €150 for the exchange. We expected that nothing extra would be charged for an exchange. It would also have been fine if this had been communicated beforehand. Overall, it left a very bad taste in our mouths and we are annoyed that we did not refuse to pay the extra charge.
Friendly but incompetent service, culinary downright bad
We sent the email below to the restaurant and received a response that we should have reported this earlier. Better luck next time! They have now asked for a public review themselves. Bizarrely embarrassing... Last Friday the 4 of us went to dinner with you. I would like to start by complimenting your team of young, enthusiastic and spontaneous boys and girls. We liked the loose character. Besides the fact that it was obvious that they were not attuned to each other. Partly because they came to tell the same story twice about the salt and the celeriac. This is actually, after the main course, the only positive thing I can share about our visit. I'm not one to review at all let alone write public reviews to get likes on stage. The 4 of us have been going to star shops for years and this was by far our worst experience. When we sat down, 2 of us sat in comfortable chairs, 2 of us had to sit on the couch. Not a comfortable sofa, but a seat that was far too short and one of the ladies even sat on the seam of 2 sofas that were next to each other. Let me start with the welcome, we were told nothing about the evening, no intro, the wines were poured to match the first course (which we still didn't know what it would be). Then 2 full loaves of bread for 4 people arrived on the table and remained on the table for the entire dinner. This was way too much and it occupied half the table continuously. Then a faberge egg comes to the table containing a beaten egg, presentation 0. Although the taste was excellent, it did not invite you to start quickly. Without elaborating on each dish, the corn soup and then a roasted avocado with banana were the last straw for us. This lack of inspiration (which we read in other reviews from 1 year ago!!) was particularly disappointing, which marked the evening. 7 white wines and 1 red wine later... in the end we sat for so long that we got irritated and said that the pace had to be increased for the last 2 courses including coffee. We also skipped a course, these were the mini ice creams that were served too early because our table had not yet been cleared. Your colleagues never came back with this. When we asked for the bill, it also took so long to arrive that we got up to get our coats ourselves. At the bar, in front of you, there was still uncertainty about whether we had paid everything. We received so much information in advance and during our stay... we were too tired that evening at 1:15 am to discuss this further. In any case, it is a reason for us not to come back to you and certainly no reason to recommend this to others if they ask us. I hope you can do something with this. If not, this is our honest humble opinion. Unfortunately, we are still very disappointed and bummed about this evening, even after two nights of sleep.
Sublime experience, very friendly chef
Everything was sublime. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left. The beautiful presentation of the food, the explanation to each dish, the exquisite taste of the food, the friendliness of the chef, who comes by to chat to each table and the beautiful decor makes this experience one to never forget. Worth every euro. Towards the end the chef greeted and thanked us and even gave a us a gift for our anniversary. Will most definitely visit again.
Here the price/quality limit has been amply exceeded!
I had a particularly negative dining experience last night with my partner at FG restaurant. I had reserved FG Foodlab, but there was only a choice of restaurant on site. I will not recommend the restaurant to anyone. Not everything of the 8 courses was really tasty, half of the dishes were topped with the same type of cream sauce. The amuse included a chewy dim sum. Most courses were a special taste experience. Side notes: very noisy environment, very messy operation. Changing waiters at the table who regularly forgot something. The chef himself was also serving all tables at the same time. But the highlight was the bill of more than 800 euros. 2x double espresso: 30 euros. Glass of rosé 19.50, in this case the bottle was just as expensive as one glass. 2x 8 courses with wine......In our experience last night, the price-quality ratio was completely lost. Waste of money FG!!!!!. We previously had a delicious meal at Herman den Blijker in restaurant Goud for 1/4 of the price, also with wine. Now that is highly recommended!
Highly recommended!
This was my first culinary experience and it was an instant hit. My boyfriend and I have not been together for long, but we enjoyed the atmosphere, fun, delicious wine, and of course the delicious food! Astonishing and blown away. It was totally worth the 2.5 hour drive for this!
Fantastic!
We have eaten here several times now and this is our favorite star restaurant. Highly recommended! Every course is a surprise and how it is served is a kind of art with surprising matching wines. If you are there, be sure to try the foie gras with white chocolate and caviar. We will come back for this alone.
