Having previously had a fantastic afternoon tea experience within the library of this Marriott hotel, we decided to try their restaurant Gillrays. However, this was an experience I would not repeat. It was extremely overpriced for what was quite frankly extremely average food. Pre arrival I thought I was going to go for the chefs hat menu, however the menu had since changed from what was shown online. As there was nothing on the new chefs hat much to my liking I opted for the fish and chips from the a la carte priced at £23!! This wouldn’t have been ridiculous had it been the best fish and chips I’d ever had, however, whilst it was not what I could say was terrible, it was certainly the least tasty fish and chips I’ve ever had. The fish lacked any flavour as did the chips which were bordering on a bit dry. The ‘posh’ peas were basically mushy peas with some whole ones throughout. The tartare sauce was not home made, it was from a well known little jar served on the side! On the back of this I decided not to order the sticky toffee pudding priced at £11 in case it was a similar experience I.e. extremely overpriced and extremely average. I do not mind at all paying slightly higher prices for great food but this was not! I’d even much rather pay £35 for a great main than £23 for an average one. You could get a far superior one most other places for around £15. The other two diners I was with opted for the chefs hat, good value at £28, but the potatoes on the starter were a bit hard, the rump steak (£7 supp) was a bit tough, chips same as above and nothing else served with it. Overall, I feel if you are going to charge these a la carte prices the food should be very good, however it appears here that they think the location is enough to charge these inflated prices. And even the view is only good if you are the right table, so not worth paying this even for a view which you may or may not get. The service was okay but certainly not worth the £15 service charge, and there was no atmosphere whatsoever. This was the least satisfactory meal we had in our whole trip or in fact any time I’ve been in London. There are much better places to eat, with or without a view!
