Kuya Lord Los Angeles Reviews from The Last Year
I ordered Laing, Lucenachon, tapsilog, and pancit chami.
I love the meats. They were flavorful and tender. I say it was perfect. Laing was amazing but I wish they asked me how spicy I want it to be. Lastly, I've never had pancit chami before. I love the noodles, but I think it was too sweet to my liking O had to add 4 whole calamansi to add some acidity to the sweetness. I wonder what makes it too sweet. My husband noticed it, too. I was wondering if the best way to eat this is with pan de sal if this had to be this sweet. Overall, the food was amazing and definitely purely authentic well-cooked Filipino dishes. I would like to go back again to try their fish dish and the calamansi pie.

When we pulled up on Thursday afternoon, Lord was in the kitchen and we were able to give him a congratulations on his James Beard Award finals. Kuya Lords concept is a casual eatery that serves classic Filipino cuisine that's simply prepared thoughtfully by a talented chef. Let's get to the details. Parking: There isn't a designated parking lot for the eatery and since I grew up up in this exact neighborhood, just a precisely two blocks away and so when I visited my parents today, my sister and I walked down to Kuya Lords to pick up lunch to have with our Pamilya. So unfortunately, I really do not know what most people do when dining in or picking up. Service: I placed a pick up order online and scheduled it for a 1:30 pick up. Walking in at 1:30pm we were greeted by the team with smiling faces and a welcoming energy. YES, the food was ready, and YES, the food was fresh and hot. So what did we order? Kuya Tray Lucenachon 5/5 stars Kuya Tray Sausage-Beef-Egg 5/5 stars Laing 4/5 stars Calamansi Pie 5/5 stars The char-grilled tocino and longganisa was perfectly tender. The Lucenachon tender and excellent crunch. The marinade for dipping was spot on. Every bite was nostalgic, comforting and inspiring. It's authentic Filipino food prepared for a modern palette. Complimenting the protein are flavorful Java rice and Achara, serving size is perfect for two but still not nearly enough Achara only because you simply just want more LOL. I love to try new things and so the Laing and the Calamansi pie were exactly that. Considering I have no basis to compare, I'm simply basing it on my tastebuds and sense of texture. Order some fluffy white rice to have with the Laing. Do that, and you're golden! I tried it with the Java rice and not so great together. That's just me. Dessert Anyone?! Calamansi pie? YES, do it. The crust itself is something that tempts you to lie to your own family members and say it's not that good, just so you can eat the entire thing yourself LOL Ah Kuya Lord, Chef, I must say, I've eaten at some of the best restaurants across the country and around the world. You are cooking up some good eats!

I came here a while ago and I loved how friendly the employees and owner were. The story of the how the owner started was very inspiring. The restaurant is a bit small so there isn't much space to eat and it is pretty hard to find parking so I would recommend ordering food for takeout. I enjoyed the calamansi pie as it was a good balance of tart and sweet but the pancit and grilled chicken weren't my favorite.

Came around 12:15pm on a Saturday and it was packed! Granted, the space is small, but very bright. You order first and then prayyyyy there's seating available by the time ur food comes. For two hungry ppl, we got the kuya tray for $45, which came with achara, pancit chami, java rice and your choice of meat. We chose lechon kiwali. I believe the sides might rotate? We also ordered a honey calamansi lemonade. It doesn't look like much food, but we were stuffed by the end of it! The lechon was juicy and fall apart tender with a roasted kind of skin. Would recommend getting the lucenachon for the more crunchy variation. The achara was a kind of pickle that was syrupy, tangy, and spiced, which paired perfectly with the fattiness of the pork. Sami had noodles that were on the softer side with a savory, saucy gravy. Washed down with the calamansi lemonade, it was a fantastic meal. For parking, as with Melrose, parking is street only so we ended up parking a few blocks away within the more residential parts as opposed to the main road and walked over. It's certainly not a cheap meal, but definitely one made with a lot of thoughtfulness and care. There were 3 folks running the whole operation so major props!

Omg!!! Super super good food! Intense flavorful Filipino flavors. The owner/chef is super nice and very creative with his food. Comfort food but elevated taste.
I had been wanting to try Kuya Lord forever! I'd pass by it
I had been wanting to try Kuya Lord forever! I'd pass by it on the way or coming back from work though and it would always have the 'Closed' sign up. Luckily I discovered they were on Postmates so of course I had to order yesterday. We ordered a tray of lechon and chicken bowl. The Java rice was savory! I grew up eating Chamorro food in San Diego and have always been obsessed with their red rice. This was very reminiscent of that. Their noodles were good too, tasted like a mix between pancit + chow mein. My husband particularly loved the lechon, he said it wasn't crazy crunchy which he liked because lechon in LA typically hurts his teeth. The chicken was tasty too. I was a little nervous because the prices here aren't cheap and I was afraid the portions wouldn't reflect that, but it was a decent size. It was enough for my Lola, husband and myself to chow down--with a little leftover for the next day too. The service through Postmates was great and we had no trouble with delivery. Overall a great experience, thanks Kuya Lord!
Kuya lord is truly fantastic.
I think elevating cuisines can sometimes lose authenticity in flavors, but that's not the case here. Location and parking are t great, but it's worth circling the block for a parking spot. The best thing I had was the Hiramasa collar. Perfectly prepared, this fish collar was flavorful, flakey and absolutely delicious. The lucenachon is perfect. Crispy, tender and sumptuous. The pancit sotanghon was delicious and full of veggies. I loved the atchara (pickled vegetables) sides with each dish. Filipino food is often seen as fatty and meat centric from people who don't know the cuisine. The Java garlic rice definitely isn't your mom's garlic rice, but it's very delicious. Calamansi pie was delicious and not too sweet. The chef and owner was there and very sweet. Service was fast. You do have to go around the back of the restaurant to use the bathroom which is inconvenient, but that's the only thing I'd bellyache about. Overall fantastic food that needs to be celebrated.
We ordered a bunch of things.
Pork belly-lechon, pancit, short ribs, rice and we also got dessert. It was ok. I think I had my hopes to have the best but it was ok. Would come back.
Food was good but not great.
The price is too high for the small quantity of the food. $25 for a rice bowl with fried pork belly is pushing it too far. I was still too hungry after eating the bowl. The kuya tray with your choice of meat was $45. We got half a chicken and came with two scoops of java rice and noodles. The java rice was okay. The noodles were mushy and sweet. Service was also okay. Took very long for the chicken to come but it wasn't fresh or have that 'hot off the grill' taste. It should've been hot and fresh for that long or a wait. The best thing was the kuya tray with slow roasted pork belly. Skin was crispy yet meat was very tender.

4/13/24 This review is based off the food ordered by my friends. If I recall correctly, we had pancit, fried rice, tocino, longanisa grilled chicken & fried milkfish. Everything tasted pretty good. My friends also said they enjoyed the food. There was a dish made with tofu but not sure what it's called-apparently it's what they're known for. We were all excited to try the calamansi pie, it was good but not that spectacular-probably because we all expected it to be really tangy & that it would capture the real taste of calamansi. It was worth the try though. I didn't really play close attention when we were ordering & I don't think I saw the usual staples like tortang talong, bistek or adobo. I'm glad we tried this place out

This was the first time eating Filipino cuisine and long story short, I will be back. I went initially to the sandwich shop next door but ended up getting some pork belly and guava rice while I was waiting. The flavors were unlike anything I have had before and I wondered if the rice and pork were the best bite of food I ever had. The only thing that I could say was that it was a little salty, and is much more enjoyable with a beverage.

Looks like the owner of this place gets really defensive with reviews based on the replies. There's a pattern of bad customer reviews. Bad business and bad food. Totally not recommending this place to anyone. Negative star. Also, your post of accusing me of bashing is a form of harassment. I will be reporting this business as well to better business bureau. I'm shocked that this place has any low reviews, the food was absolutely delicious and so worth the drive out! While it's Filipino cuisine, don't come here expecting traditional dishes. Kuya Lord puts their own spin on things which is different but still feels genuine! The only downside is the lack of space and seating in the restaurant itself, so I would recommend taking the food to go rather than planning to dine in. We ordered the Lucenachon tray which was the perfect amount of food for two people. The meat paired with their homemade vinegar was so good!!
Heard great things but was very underwhelmed.
Had to wait 40 minutes for our food when others who were in line behind us got their food first. Now onto the food... got the Kuya tray, which had a little bit of everything to try, and the kewali lechon. Also ordered the honey calamansi drink. The meats were extremely salty, although the lechon and sausage had good flavor. Beef was dry. I enjoyed the honey calamansi drink. Restaurant was packed around 5:30 making it difficult to find a seat, but eventually we were able to get a table. Unfortunately the long wait and subpar food on top of that really made Kuya Lord a miss for me.

Modern Filipino Food that would benefit from better service
Derived from the Tagalog word for “older brother” combined with Chef Lord Maynard Llera's name Kuya Lord offers regional Filipino dishes rethought through classical technique on Melrose at the corner of Western Avenue. Begun as a pop-up out of the Chef’s home during November of 2020, pandemic restrictions still in full effect for most of California, three intervening years find Kuya Lord firmly situated on several “best of” lists despite just 21 seats. Considered "quick casual," a concise menu and online ordering seeing the staff of four in non-stop motion even as guests are responsible for bussing their own tables, prices range roughly $20-30 per person for hearty portions of everything from roast Meats to Noodles. Filled shortly after opening with a crowd of varying ages and ethnicities, music overhead adding to the buzz, most plates arrive perhaps fifteen minutes after the bill is paid and every single one finds distinct balance thanks to the combination of fermentation, salt and sweetness. Beginning with “Filipino Ramen,” a steaming bowl of Pork Broth loaded with Pork Belly adjacent textural components and fried Garlic, Llera's Pancit utilizes thicker Noodles than usual with a lot of Umami added by Fish Cakes. Focused more on Pork than the famous Fish Collar, both Lechon with shattering Skin and chopped Lucenachon tender as one can find, sweet Tocino alongside Garlic Rice and Pickled Green Papaya is fragrant, filling and lightly perfumed by smoke. Not one to skip Dessert, both available in limited quantities daily, Calamansi Pie eats nearly identical to Key Lime with a subtle hint of Coconut while Filipino Peanut Brittle Spread adds depth to delicate Rice Flour Cake.

How do you set a timeline for getting your bid accepted? I can’t wait till the actual time I want to go. I want to know at least eight hours ahead of time. How do you do that?
