My partner and I can honestly say that this was the most disappointing dining experience of our lives. We felt so deflated after our visit, and the dissatisfaction continued for days after. I booked this reservation at Le Gavroche as a Christmas present for my partner. We were both extremely excited beforehand. The decor itself is somewhat dated and we noted the unpleasant forced marketing left on the table, with a little card selling Michel Roux Jr’s book. This was unsavoury and a bit desperate, and the somewhat gauche ornaments on the table were peculiar as well. The canapés and bread and butter that arrived prior to the food were mediocre for an establishment of such prestige. We have had better at dozens of restaurants far away from the supposed level of Le Gavroche. At least the wine we had was very pleasant. However, our main gripe comes in the form of the restaurant's signature dish, the cheese soufflé. The presentation, as seen in the photo, was sloppy and the taste was so salty it rendered the dish inedible. Cream and cheese is hard to go wrong with, but each mouthful I had I could feel my arteries clogging up. We both left the majority of the dish, certain that if we were somehow to stomach it all we'd have had some cardiovascular issue prior to returning home. The main dish of lamb cutlets was pleasant and the flavours combined throughly well. But it lacked that 'wow' factor one would have expected. The depth of the sauce was average. We were planning on having much more; desserts, the cheese trolley etc. but after the deflation of the starter we made our exit. To their credit, they took off the starters but we still managed to pay over £100 for 2 glasses of wine and two dishes. The staff, though, did not seem bothered by our experience, exemplified by the manager who quipped 'well the restaurant is full' with a shrug of the shoulder. The experience made us question the entire Michelin model, and high-level cuisine as a whole. I'm sure this establishment will ride the wave of its reputation just fine for years to come for those with the money. But if you're wondering whether to fork out as a treat and go here, we would recommend you look at other options so you don't leave extremely disappointed as we did.
