I had heard good things about Nido even before I saw it showcased on a recent episode of "Check, Please! Bay Area". Jamie W. and I happened to be sauntering around Jack London Square on a brisk Saturday morning, and I noticed it out of the corner of my eye. I have sharp corners because I'm Asian after all. Anyway, we decided we could have an early lunch although it was already pretty busy with young families taking over most of the real estate and baby strollers blocking our path to the table they assigned us.The brunch menu was small but appeared appetizing as they change it seasonably based on the availability of local fresh ingredients. We took advantage and ordered the $9 Chips and Guac, which tasted freshly fried and crispy - although the housemade salsa was more dominant than the guacamole (photo: bit.ly/2TbH18p). Jamie tried the $15 Chilaquiles Verde con Pollo, a nacho-like creation with tortilla chips tossed in a tomatillo-jalapeño salsa, soft poached egg, pulled chicken, avocado, crema fresca, queso fresco, red onion, and cilantro (photo: bit.ly/3akw0aP).The combination was surprisingly fresh and flavorful. I went for the $13 bowl of Caldo de Limon, a chicken soup with chile poblano, chile jimmy nardello, lemon, avocado, tomato, cilantro, and corn chips (photo: bit.ly/3cdt1m6). The broth could have been a tad richer, and the portion more generous, but again the flavor profile was strong. From our agreed-upon perspective, the one downside was the service which came across as somewhat passive and with a bit of that unmistakable hipster 'tude.FOOD - 4 stars...fresh ingredients make an impression hereAMBIANCE - 3 stars...a bit crowded and loud in hereSERVICE - 2.5 stars...yeah, not a hallmark hereTOTAL - 4 stars...wish the whole experience was more of a match with the foodRELATED - In the mood for Mexican?
