Rocksalt Folkestone Reviews from The Last Year
How I wish this restaurant would impress....
This was my fourth visit here. I have never been blown away but because so many people say such great things you come back thinking it must just be you, however once again it was underwhelming. The food was good - not exceptional and not value for money The service was good. The ambience is decidedly flat. The decor is dull - grey and utilitarian. It is saved by the position overlooking the harbour but being east facing it is not at its best for dinner - the sunset is behind you. The Waterfront in Hythe doesn't quite have the location - but the food, atmosphere and value is way better.
All skirt no knickers… definitely not worth your time or money.., so many far better places along Folkestone front…
Heard so many good things about Rocksalt and was so disappointed. All skirt and no knickers is the phrase I’d use. Beautiful location, great views. Best spot in Folkestone, however, service was so slow, staff were inattentive and at points disinterested, drinks were overly expensive. We always pay higher prices for the experience but thus just didn’t live up to expectations… On a positive you can have dogs in the outside area…
Will be back soon
Came here for lunch, hadn't been fir a year or so because of previously disappointed. No disappointment this time, really enjoyed a lovely lunch. Beautiful cooked Dover Sole, good wine and to die for sticky toffee pudding. Standard is back up again. Will be back soon.
Style over substance
Firstly I want to emphasise that the staff were excellent and extremely attentive. However I have to say that the whole experience was style over substance. Only little gripes but the issue is that if you’re paying these prices, everything has to be exceptional. And it wasn’t. Firstly, they forgot my wife’s drink. When I chased, the staff were extremely apologetic and resolved the issue but it she had to wait about 20 minutes for it to arrive. Starters came quickly and were very tasty and well presented. Then the mains. My steak was £34 without any potatoes or vegetables. A side of chips was £6. When it arrived the steak was extremely fatty and hard to cut. The staff asked how our meals were and for the first time in my life (42 years) I did actually mention that I wasn’t really enjoying it. The waitress handled it gracefully and offered to replace it. The second steak was much better. But my wife had ordered lamb and, whilst we both appreciate quality over quantity, the size of her plate for £32 was disgraceful. I’ve never seen a smaller cut of lamb. It was genuinely embarrassing. I really don’t mind paying money for a quality dining experience. But the issue is, if you’re charging London waiting prices it has to be an experience to remember. I honestly enjoyed my meal at the Greek restaurant up the road the previous night much more and it was half the price. Rocksalt is so hugely overhyping the experience and I have to say, we would neither recommend nor return based on this experience.
Poor service, mediocre food
Very slow service over an hour wait between starter and main, food was cold and small portions, over priced, very disappointing, won’t be going back, would not recommend
So Much Potential..
We were hoping that this was a dedicated fish restaurant, showcasing exquisite fish dishes (being in a prime coastal location overlooking the harbour) but all in all it was quite disappointing. The menu boasted only two main fish dishes and a 'Catch of the day' dish, which were uninspiring. For starters we had the prawns and the mussels which were nice, but no different from other restaurants or chain pubs we have visited but the mains were most mediocre. The cod was in a beautiful sauce, there just wasn't enough of it... Or the cod for that matter. The skate, though pan fried perfectly, gave nothing. No flavour and no sauce which it desperately needed. The seasonal greens were swimming in water and the paprika chips, with no paprika. It just didn't feel very thought out. There's a nice atmosphere, but the whole meal was average at best. Service was very good, attentive and just what you'd hoped for. The price, for the quality and innovation of food and menu, was way too much - but there is so much potential.
Good night and fab cocktails
Lovely views but very expensive. The service is very slow and you can't order at the bar. We waited over half an hour to get a drink.
Great Experience
After reading reviews was slightly worried might be disappointed but quite the opposite. The food, service and portion sizes were excellent. We both had starters and a main course and couldn’t finish them. The asparagus with poached egg and wild garlic mayonnaise was delicious and we both said one of the best starters we’d had in a long time. Very well cooked, seasoned and presented. My husband had the cod and I had the wild garlic risotto mains. Again, both dishes were very tasty and well presented. We ordered 3 sides but really didn’t need them. It was so good I’ve organised a girls lunch there next month and really looking forward to it.
Poor General Manager's response to my complaint about my 14 April visit "Horrible"
I was amazed to learn from the General Manager's response that the horrible waiter was a manager. I was not at all hostile but merely insisted on my reserved table. He had not said that the table had been reserved prior to my reservation. I did not throw the menu across the table. It was a very small table and the menus took up nearly half the table. My dropping the menu carelessly could not reasonably have been taken as throwing it across the table. I just wanted to get out. The General Manager Leon had previously come over to my table to welcome me and chat. He seemed very pleasant and professional so I was disappointed by the delay in responding and the poor and inaccurate content
Fab restaurant but the slowest service!
Stopped off on a Bank Holiday Sunday, no reservation required, took a table for 3 in the upstairs restaurant/bar. A carafe of wine & a beer took 30 mins to arrive, after 1 hr I asked again if we might order food, finally our order was taken and a further hour later, mussels & haddock/chips arrived, no third meal. Serving staff apologised - gave us a free round of drinks, nice touch but not really sure we wanted/needed more wine! My meal arrived 2 hrs after we’d sat down. Saw several people give up and walk out. The couple next to us started playing cards to pass the time! No idea what the problem was, there are not so many covers upstairs that it was impossible to manage between 2/3 staff members, perhaps the kitchen was struggling, no reason was given but thankfully (helped by a LOT of wine!) we laughed it off. Food was good when it arrived. Can’t see how they can be turning a profit if they have 3 people taking 2.5hrs to have one course and a round of drinks for just shy of £30 a head, especially given they also gave away free drinks. Not a successful business model. I do hope they get it sorted as overall a great restaurant in a fabulous location.
First time visit.
Had drinks in the bar before dinner. What can I say? Amazing view from the deck and a list of interesting drinks to choose from. Dinner was incredible from start to finish. We started with the oysters. They were the best I ever had. So fresh, so good. I chose the lamb for the entree. Never had I ever had such such a tasty lamb dish. I'm afraid I will never have lamb this incredible again. Finished off the dinner with the apple sorbet. Yummy. I am so glad I selected this restaurant. I highly recommend it.
