The Tamil Prince London Reviews from The Last Year
Very enjoyable, thanks to the kind staff
In a backstreet in a beautiful corner of Islington, this pub restaurant is not that easy to find. But we were glad we did ! Unfortunately when we arrived our booking had been messed up (not their fault at all) but the staff was lovely and managed to fit us in with a good table. The food arrived quickly and was very good. A short menu but plenty of choice all the same. The dishes were all tasty and the bread was outstanding so we ordered more. My only quibble was the aubergine curry which had been overcooked, and was not a main course dish. Restaurant prices, not pub or takeaway prices are practiced here but it just felt like London prices, nothing shocking. Having eaten at the Darjeeling Express, it felt positively cheap !
Not quite as you expect
First of all this not a family restaurant but local pub, it was busy so the waitress couldn’t care, we waited for 15 mins and then left.
An afternoon well spent!
I don't usually leave a review, but the food and drinks here were so good. We walked in and were told that there was roughly an hour wait. We went around the corner, to a pub while we waited. We sat outside and ordered Masala Margaritas that were absolutely divine, the spices really complimented the tanginess of the drink. These will be on my mind for a long time, now. We ordered 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 sides. This was the perfect portion sizing for two. The stand outs were the Roti and the Okra fries. I would recommend a visit and I can't wait to return. Worth the wait!
Good food,uncomfortable seating
4/5 for the food 3/5 for ambience and comfort Of dining . Located at a Corner pub about 15 Mins walk from Angel or King’s Cross tube stop. Extremely busy and fully booked so most walk-ins are turned away. Interior very much of a Gastro pub feel. Glass window for views into the kitchen where you can the chef busy preparing food including the roti. Cramped seating worse if it’s counter seats. Little space to eat, hard stools and sun in your face at lunchtime. Noise level extremely high . Small seating area - table also Liked very cramped with table adjacent very close. The prince cocktail- a take on a sour was nice- cardamom and rose water Predominant flavours. Odd that prawn turned up before the roti or the okra fries. If you fancy having a light lunch and ordering roti with some small dishes- Do have to tell them that you want all of them together if not it will come staggered. Roti was nice- more towards roti canai (Malaysian style). Varraval Prawns were good- 7 medium size pieces with little sauce with an intense taste. The okra fries were very nice, crispy , more on the oily side and a large portion. Gulab jamun- balls of sponge cake with almond, orange strands and custard sauce : sweet but one of the better deserts.
Well worth it!
Excellent Indian fine dining. Simple menu with just the right number of options. Perfect for sharing. The lamb chops were a delight as were the roti breads.
Excellent !
Amazing place with great food , please book your table in advance ! I guarantee great service and taste worth every penny :)
Avoid.
This dining experience was notably disappointing. Small cramped seating with an overpriced menu for the quality they offer. - Mango Lassi: Excellent, a redeeming aspect of the meal. - Okra fries: Crispy but bland. - Chicken Lollipop: Over salted, lacking in flavor. - King Prawns: Over salted, lacking in flavor. - Lamb Curry: Bland and tasteless, similar to late-night takeaway quality. - Roti: No issues, satisfactory.
Book in advance
We’d wanted to try this restaurant for a while as it has built up a good reputation but you really need to book exactly 4 weeks in advance to get in, which makes it difficult. The food, especially the small plates, was very good but we did feel that we were being rushed out. Our reservation was for 1hour 45minutes. When we arrived we heard the staff tell a couple that there were already 15 walk-in requests on the waiting list ahead of them. When we ordered we took the advice of getting 3 small plates and were told there’d be a gap between finishing them and receiving our large plates. Unfortunately they committed what I consider to be a cardinal sin of bringing out the mains before we’d finished the starters. This didn’t give us time to digest the starters and as a result didn’t really enjoy our mains as much as we would have. As the waitress cleared our plates we declined dessert but still had half a bottle of wine left. She brought the bill and card payment machine out straight away, without us requesting it. We felt that was our queue to leave despite only being there for 90 minutes of our booking. The food and atmosphere was worth 5 stars but I’ve based my review on the whole experience, which was below our expectations.
Incredible food
The food was absolutely incredible , and very reasonable. Lovely cocktails, good service and a good atmosphere. We will definitely be back
Good food. Worth a trip? Only if you live nearby.
I have given 3 stars to the Tamil Prince. The food and service could have been 4 stars or an easy 3.5 but just an overall feeling of not living up to expectations. Here's why. 1) Tables - don't expect one. We sat at a counter by the window. This was fine but not particularly comfortable and definitely crammed in with the people next to you. 2) Food - the food is definitely tasty. But is it any better than your local Indian/Sri Lankan fare. Assuming your local is decent, probably not. None of the dishes wow you and you do not leave thinking that you haven't tried that before. The okra fries were decent, although bland, and not as good as Dishoom's if that's what you are expecting. The appetizers are good, we had the chicken lollipops and the shrimp. Good, but nothing to write home about. For mains we had a chicken curry and a lamb curry. Oddly, the portion sizes for the appetizers were a lot larger than the mains. The chicken curry had two cubes of chicken only, bobbing around in a sea of spice free sauce. All the dishes could have used more heat which was disappointing. The standout is the roti, which is up there amongst the best around. 3) Atmosphere - this was fine. Although a little loud on the music. Definitely more of a pub vibe than an evening out or date night vibe.
