The Up Room Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
great stay
Just and old, but remodeled, cool hotel. Rooftop is a great experience. Not often i can say hotels are fun, but this one definitely is. Service is amazing and all hotel staff are friendly and helpful. Definitely worth the experience. Its Chicago at its best.
Trendiest Sauna I’ve ever stayed in
Trendy hotel, great staff and customer service, nice room. Worst night’s sleep EVERRR due to the fact that there was no way to regulate the room temperature. Even though we had the thermostat set to the lowest setting, our room temperature averaged 80 degrees. We could’ve opened the window, but street noise was loud. Unfortunately probably won’t stay here next time.

Awesome views of the city!!! A roommate and I stopped by and loved the drinks and the gentleman who waited on us was super friendly and even made my drinks mocktails as I had to be sober. Would definitely stop by again!
Recently visited Chicago and Up Room.
What's Up Room? Not much, but Up Room is a very nice bar that has an amazing view of the city, especially at night. It's a rooftop bar that is on the 20-something floor and has a great view into the tall buildings of the city. The food and drinks are also great. They have some very interesting specialty cocktails and some good food to snack on. I tried a spiced Oaxacan cocktail and their charcuterie board, which was a decent amount to share with 3-5 people. The ambiance and service was also really nice. It has a comforting and relaxing atmosphere as a small bar, and the servers were very personable and gave us recommendations on drinks. Overall, would highly recommend.
Quirky dorm style living.
The Robey is nice. Definitely quirky. Absolutely very loud, and full of young adults. The floors are pretty dirty (at least in our room), everything else appears clean enough. It’s more of a $100-150 price, not the $400 price tag. The Coyote lounge was under my room, if that tells you how loud it is. I even used their sound machine, along with another I went and bought. 🤣. Adding to the constant bass, and subway (🤣), were the group of ten girls spaced out along the hall we were in. Including, their ding dong ditch of our room early in the morning. 🤷 ♀️. This is more along the lines of the sorority that I used to live in, and maybe the dorm at Ferris when the alibi was still alive. Granted, I wasn’t expecting a ton of sleep since we were there with friends to attend the Natalie Jane concert at the subterranean. I just expected it to be at least as nice as our $300 concierge level Westin stay downtown. Which we ended up going back the following day. 🤣.
NEVER have we had a bad experience here.
Not once. We've been at least a dozen times since moving here. Indoor service, outdoor service, bar service. Always perfection. We love the little charcuterie boards here too. The cheeses, meats, nut mix is yummy, as are the olives! The cocktails are literally to die for. SO GOOD! AND they have those absolutely beautiful clear huge ice cubes! Gorgeous in an Old Fashioned! This lounge has very talented and skillful bartenders, who are literally so creative and artistic! It's a blast to go there and say, "Surprise me!" and then be served something incredible! The staff here are also SO friendly and helpful. And QUICK. We have never been left waiting. In the dozen or so times we have been there, we have had experiences with Audrey, Demetrio, Alice, Emma, Seth, Jesenia, and Managers Keke and Germaine. All absolute professionals. It's rare to find so many incredible people are in one place. I guess this is how you end up with "our favorite spot!" How do I know all their names? Because that is JUST HOW GOOD the experience is there. Worth remembering! Oh! Almost forgot, THE VIEW!! WOWOW!!! Take that view in! It's so worth it!
Our group had a surprise engagement party for our friends
Our group had a surprise engagement party for our friends here and we rented the corner space through coordination by Jillian from the Robey team. They were super flexible with our budget and allowed us to pick from a number of stationed appetizers and have a bar tab. Once we reached our minimum for the tab, they switched It to a cash bar! The coordination with Jillian's team was impecable and we cannot recommend her or this place enough for your next private gathering !
Great Option!
This hotel is wonderful. It's reasonably priced and you get a nice room with several amenities (robe, slippers, fridge, coffee maker, shampoo, and body lotion from high-end vendor, nice quality sheets and towels). I appreciated the black-out shades and sound machine. Both worked well. This is a safe neighborhood with lots of shops, restaurants, etc. within walking distance and the hotel is located next to subway stop. I went to Cafe Robey twice - it's popular so I recommend a reservation (just in case). They were booked for Saturday brunch and a spot called Yolk - Test Kitchen (~10 minute walk) was suggested - it was excellent! I'll definitely stay here again.
So funny story, every time I am in the Wicker Park area, I
So funny story, every time I am in the Wicker Park area, I make an attempt to walk-in to this place but was always unfortunate, however, for the first time on a Friday night, we got lucky and I could finally visit this cocktail bar! (with a large party?!) Up room was the final stop on our food and drinks crawl experience and we loved it! They do not have a lot of tables inside however they have a pretty huge patio. We also found out an enclosed space where our party could relax and enjoy good conversations. The enclosed space was heated so we could enjoy it even on a cold wintery night. My friend and I tried Chai me to the Moon and Sky High cocktails and they were amazing! I'll definitely come back to try more cocktails. The view is beautiful and you can see the entire Chicago skyline on a clear night! Overall, a nice cocktail bar you should check out if you are in the neighborhood.
After several failed attempts to get a table at the Up Room
After several failed attempts to get a table at the Up Room in the past, we finally got a table. The space is relatively small in terms of seating, but the patio is huge. There is also an enclosed seating space which very few know about. We tried the chai me to the moon and the Sky High cocktails, both of which were great. The service was fast and the server was attentive. The view is just breathtaking and was definitely the main highlight! They have an unobstructed view of the whole downtown skyline and it is a treat to the eyes.

The sunset and nighttime view of the city is the reason to come to this rooftop bar. The cocktails are decent, though I personally think the nearby The Violet Hour makes better drinks. Service was timely, and the staff were knowledgeable. The NA drinks were reasonably complex, in order to justify the similar price to alcoholic drinks. TLDR: come here for the view, especially in good weather in the summer.
Really cute spot to grab drinks with a view! I forget which
Really cute spot to grab drinks with a view! I forget which drinks I got but they were good and fairly priced!
Perfect for Me
Exactly what I want in a hotel: great design, chill and effective service, decent restaurant with full room service. Would be five stars, but there was banging from within the hotel all evening on both nights. I think a mechanical system someplace needs additional soundproofing or fine-tuning. The L can be heard, but it's mild and the room has a white noise speaker. This regards room 3009 in the annex.
Easily one of the best cocktails I have had in the city!!
Easily one of the best cocktails I have had in the city!! The Oaxacan on Broken Glass is the only cocktail I have had that has gotten progressively better as you drink it. They light the rosemary garnish so the presentation as incredible, and you taste the spicy flavor changes to the smokiness of the rosemary as you drink it. Still thinking about it! Not to mention the views and the ambiance are fabulous; it's a very unique view of the city. The service was great too. Cant wait to go back!!
Corner kings are a bad gamble. same price for bad low floors with no views unless you know someone
I have stayed here on two different occasions in the last two months because my father passed away and I have had to fly in and out of Chicago several times for his funeral and executor duties. On each of the last two trips I decided to spend a little more than I usually would because my life is hard and I miss my dad and I wanted a nice room. Both times I have paid almost $400 a night for a room and both times I have been put on one of the lowest possible floors. This last time I upgraded to a supposedly nicer corner room where great views of the city were promised. Maybe you get those nice views on the upper floor. However, on the lower floors your view is crappy (see attached photos). You have big windows showing you big views of cars very close to you on the street below (which you will also get to hear, since the windows can't block the noise very well when you are so close to the street), a bunch of junk and garbage under the L, an abandoned bank, and stuff like that. It is a bad view. I am sad I am closer to it with big windows looking out on it. The main takeaway is if you are flying in and are not here at 3, you will get a crap room on a low floor. My flight has come in at 6 PM both nights and it appears if you get in any time after mid afternoon you will be stuck on a low crap floor for the same price as all the people getting a great view and not staring at traffic, abandoned banks, and garbage under the L. When we checked in my husband reiterated we would like the highest floor possible (which we also put in the reservation) and the nice young man at the front desk started a long story about because Biden was doing some event in china that put a strain on the San Francisco airport and many people had stayed over--which was the prelude to revealing we once again had a very low floor and a crap room. He kindly said but really all the views are great. While he is kind, what he said is untrue. It doesn't make you feel better to pay almost 400 getting a crap low floor room to have someone tell you it is actually a good view. The counter factual reality is a little maddening to hear. I did admire the young woman I got a long close up view of waiting for the bus for half an hour while reading a book in the cold in the failing light. My husband and I thought It was kind of hilarious that Biden, China and San Francisco were being blamed for our crap view in a Chicago hotel despite the high price and website promises. Maybe that works with right wingers. I guess the logic of the person's statement was that because something happened at an airport in San Francisco our long made reservation didn't matter. We had to have a far worse room than we normally would get because people needed to stay there instead of going back to San Francisco at the last minute, I'm not quite sure why that means we would have to have the lowest crap floor, and they would get the highest because of this but there it is And in the days leading up to this I received a phone call a text and email messages asking if I was really going to stay there. At the time I thought it was because I had had to change an earlier reservation but now I realize it was probably because they were trying to get more rooms for people other than me who matter more. There are some nice things about this hotel: it has black out drapes and is well maintained and has old school style. The guy at the front desk was nice if maddeningly wrong about our too expensive room havng a nice view. Yeah you just got a really bad room but let's be cheery about it! After all you're the one who has to pay the same high rate for the crappy room so we might as well act like It's GREAT!. Not enough to make up for tiny bathrooms with crappy shower and no tub, a lot of noise on the low floors, and not enough light in the room to read a book once you have turned them all on. My big point is: they should charge less for the corner kings on Floors 7 and lower. People on floors 8-14 may have a nice view. I will never know, because I have only been put on the 4th floor and the 3rd floor--since the lobby is first floor and the lounge is on the second this means the 800 I have paid has landed me on the lowest floor and the second lowest floor. I strongly feel anyone on the low floor should be paying $75-100 less than people on 8-14. Just be aware if you are flying in and don't have some kind of in with the hotel, unless they are really underbooked you will be stuck on a low floor and get way less for your money than other people. Their rates should reflect this and they do not. Don't be fooled like I was. Sadly though I was trying to pay more to get something nicer, I paid more to get the least nice rooms of any I stayed in during this sad fall season where I have been in Chicago hotels way too much after losing Dad. This hotel was a big disappointment. Its too much of a gamble. There is a very good chance you will pay top dollar and still be stuck on the bottom.
Excellent experience
We stayed at The Robey for the location but were pleasantly surprised by the excellent service from everyone in the hotel. The food was expensive but amazing, and the shower was fantastic.... I had to look up and order the shampoo & conditioner -Le Labo Santal 33 as it was excellent. It was impressive to have included in our stay and turned us onto a new company as we loved the products. Our window was right next to the Chicago transit and were concerned about noise but happy to say it did not bother us a bit. They even had a ? where you could play rain - bubbling creek or chimes - interesting! The only thing that we were not impressed with was trying to eat breakfast in the room. It was not set up to be comfortable as only one chair. The other chairs were too low. The person at the front desk said to make a point to go to the rooftop (THANK YOUI) and mentioned their squash bread was wonderful... and it was !! Overall, it was an expensive night but a very wonderful experience.
Super clean, quiet, great location in Wicker Park
We stayed on a Sunday night. Super clean, comfortable bed, nicely decorated. We like the layout of our room. Has a sitting area. Nice use of space. It is small, but doesn’t feel cramped. Surprisingly quiet considering it is on a busy street. The rooftop bar is worth a look. The views are special. Chocolate chip cookies are available in the lobby from 4-6 pm. Delicious! Staff are friendly, helpful. The view from our room on the 7th floor was beautiful. I recommend and hope to stay here again.
Charming and spotless
Room was charming and spotless. The bed very comfy and bathroom ample. Made great use of the space, which was a bit smaller than expected and only reason this isn’t 5-star. Staff was wonderful and location great.
